Coco Gauff faced heavy opposition from Elena Ruse but the American was able to prevail 6-2 7-6(4) to move to the US Open.
Gauff arrived at the US Open as a dark horse candidate to win both the singles and doubles. So far it's going good for her as she's in the 3rd round with this win. The first set was rather simple for the American as she took an early break and saved break points to confirm it.
From there it was largely a smooth sailing affair that finished with 6-2 for Gauff. It was a very poor set from Ruse who could not hit her serve and could not keep the ball inside the court. The 2nd set was much better than the Romanian.
She served better and played more aggressively giving Gauff a run for her money. Things got interesting when Ruse took an early 2-1 lead but gave it right back 2-2. She took another lead later 5-3 but got broken at 5-4 when serving for the set.
It was a huge missed chance as she was up 40-15 in that game. Eventually, we got to the tiebreak where Gauff played more consistently and secure the straight sets win.
