America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff produced an absolute
masterclass in the
Madrid Open. The 20-year-old is often regarded as one of the
most highly-rated players currently playing in the women’s tennis in the singles
category.
In the ongoing Madrid Open, Gauff produced an absolute
masterclass as she defeated the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus in the round of 64 in straight
sets, that too without losing a single game with a score of 6-0, 6-0. The match
just last 51 minutes where the reigning world number three where she registered
as many as 14 winners, 12 more than her opponent on the day. While doing so, Gauff
became only the third player after Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep to win a
contest without losing a single game in the history of Madrid Open.
Talking after the match, the Florida-born joked how she wanted
to clear the court as the fans were eager to watch Spain’s Rafael Nadal in
action. “I know everyone’s here to see Rafa so I was just trying to get off the
court for you guys!” said Gauff. “I’m happy to be back here in Madrid. I like
the conditions here. It feels good to be outside; my last tournament was
indoors, so it’s good to be back in the sun even though it’s a little bit
cooler than normal.”
