Coco Gauff didn't want to waste no time when it came to her opener at the Madrid Open as she thrashed Dutchwoman, Arantxa Rus in no time at all in a devastating double bagel win for the US Open champion at Caja Magica.
Those wanting to see Rafael Nadal shortly will have had a short wait as Gauff made sure that he made the early evening time slot against Darwin Blanch. Albeit due to her utterly clinical play against Rus. She won 6-0, 6-0 to reach the third round in Madrid. Winning the match in just 52 minutes, Rus could barely get near her.
This was evident by Rus winning only eight points in the first set and 10 points in the second set. The opening set lasted only 23 minutes and the second 29 minutes albeit of course she wasn't playing a no name player with Rus ranked inside the top 50. Gauff opened her season last week at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix but was halted by Marta Kostyuk so perhaps a statement needed to be sent.
She next faces Dayana Yastremska and could yet take on her compatriot Madison Keys in the fourth round who is in the same quarter and takes on Liudmila Samsonova who took care of a stumbling Naomi Osaka earlier today. Iga Swiatek also opens her account this evening either side of the Rafael Nadal opener.
