Coco Gauff and Olga Danilovic are both into the second week of the 2024 French Open after remarkable wins for both reasons. The American in particular made light work of a tricky test in Dayana Yastremska.
Gauff sealed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Yastremska with the US Open champion making light work of the Ukrainian's service game time and time again. The No.3 seed won five out of nine of the service game against a player who won the Australian Open shock card reaching the semi-finals.
In three matches, Gauff has made that her calling card winning 15 for 25 service games. Nobody is better in the WTA right now at breaking serve. She's winning 49 percent of these next in line is World Number One, Iga Swiatek with 47 percent.
“One thing I learned from Serena [Williams], she would spend probably like an hour sometimes literally just hitting returns,” Gauff said. “I took inspiration from that because that’s the first part of the point. I think the average rally is like four or five balls. The first two balls are really important.
“For me, returns were something I was working on a lot because my return-made percentage honestly used to be really, really bad like a couple years ago. I’d be curious to look at those stats.”
Whilst her serve might not be at its best right now, she certainly has another calling card when it comes to breaking. Into the second week and Elisabetta Cocciaretto who dumped out Liudmila Samsonova awaits.
Olga Danilovic showed too that her win over Danielle Collins was no flash in the pan. The Serbian who continues to make strides found her way past Donna Vekic falling to the floor crying on court as she continues a landmark run.
She did so too after going 6-0 down in the first set and having to wrestle through two close sets in the process 7-5, 7-6 to win in just over three hours. She is ranked inside the top 125 in the world. But that likely won't last long. She is one of the stories of the tournament so far and moves onto the second week. The draw has opened up too with Chloe Paquet or Marketa Vondrousova awaiting her.
