America’s Coco Gauff has achieved another milestone in her career. The 20-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in women’s tennis in the singles category along with the likes of Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka and Poland’s Iga Swiatek.
Gauff recently participated in the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi which is the last major competition in the women’s calendar. The young American tennis star ended up lifting the title after beating China’s Qinwen Zheng in the final with a score of 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. The reigning world number three, with that win, earned a handsome prize money of $4.6 million.
With the addition of that prize money, Gauff only became the fourth tennis player who was born after 2000 to have career earnings of more than $20 million. Before her, only the current men’s world number one, Jannik Sinner, four-time Grand Slam winner Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and reigning world number two in women’s tennis, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, managed to achieve that feat. With that win, Gauff finished the season with 52 victories and just 16 defeats in 68 outings.
The title in Riyadh was her third title this year. She first lifted the ASB Classic in January in Auckland, where she got the better of Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in the final with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. She then lifted the China Open in Beijing in September where she defeated the Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-3. Despite those wins, Gauff would be disappointed with how her Grand Slam season went in 2024. Her best outing this year in major events came in the Australian and French Open where she lost in the semifinal. In Melbourne, Gauff lost to reigning world number one Sabalenka in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4. She then lost to Poland’s Swiatek in the semifinal at the Roland Garros in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
