After an 11-match winning streak and having to battle adversity during the match itself due to the umpire, Coco Gauff has ended the run of Karolina Pliskova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and overcame her own slump from last week at the Qatar Open.
Gauff last week in Doha was dumped out by Katerina Siniakova in one of her worst defeats in a long time and one of her first since winning the US Open last year. Having this new status as one of the biggest stars in tennis makes Gauff a scalp even more so now than when she was a rising teen.
Facing also a player very much on the rise again after a long-time in the tennis doldrums winning Cluj then using a dash to Doha from Romania to her advantage, she struggled early on as she had to play the waiting game and outlast her. After dropping the opening set 2-6, Gauff played better in the second set. Double faults were an issue early on and they were rectified.
Pliskova had plenty of chances in the second, but couldn't keep Gauff at bay on her own serve. But she also had to have some added motivation with the umpire being a gripe as she was denied a request for the supervisor to double check a ruling that he had made. Still though, this did more to help Gauff as she surged through.
The final set was a complicated affair as Pliskova had multiple break chances, but she couldn't let anything stick and as a result, Gauff moves through to a clash with Anna Kalinskaya who dumped out Jelena Ostapenko earlier today ending her streak to losing to players only called Victoria Azarenka.
