Jannik Sinner's "mental upgrade" has taken his game to the next level and has been the catalyst for his recent success, says tennis journalist Jon Wertheim.
Sinner, 22, has kicked into new gears over the last few months, reaching the final of the ATP World Tour Finals before picking up his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January. He backed that up by winning the Rotterdam Open last weekend, beating Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the final.
Wertheim gave his theory for the Italian's surge in success on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast. He said: "I mean we talked about sort of the adjustments of the service motion and you know he (Sinner) is a big guy that I think people are finally realizing. This is like a 6'5" athlete. This guy's got probably 6 inches on Alcaraz, but I think this mental upgrade, this is like post U.S. Open."
Wertheim delved into the idea that Sinner's new 'never say die' attitude has made him show a different side to his game. "This mental elevation that he has done. Six months ago you would say 'boy nice player, all the tools are there but not the guy I want with my life on the line'," he added. "He has completely turned, not just winning close matches, just the little things. He plays like losing hasn’t entered the equation for him. The idea of losing doesn't really seem to have dawned on him, and that's a nice place to be."
Sinner's victories Down Under and in the Netherlands have seen him rise to a career-high third in the world rankings.
