America’s tennis star
Coco Gauff is set to return to action in
the China Open later this month.
The 19-year-old has recently lifted her first Grand Slam
title after beating the current world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final with
a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in New York.
Following that victory, Gauff has decided to take an
extended break and will now return to action in the China Open.
Previously, she was scheduled to take part in the ongoing WTA
1000 Guadalajara Open.
After that, Gauff will turn his attention to playing the
last big event in the WTA calendar, the Finals, which will be played in Cancun, Mexico.
The Atlanta-born will also take part in the Billie Jean King
Cup after the WTA Finals.
Gauff’s recent triumph at the Flashing Medows was a
continuation of her great results in the recent past, especially after the
Wimbledon 2023 debacle where she was knocked out after losing in the first
round to America’s Sofia Kenin with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
After that, the young tennis star won the Citi Open after
defeating Greece’s Maria Sakkari in the final with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
That’s not it as she also won the Cincinnati Open (Western
& Southern Open) after beating Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in the
final with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Former world number one Andy Roddick was recently quoted in
a report where he stated that this is just the beginning for Gauff.
“There are dominant forces in women’s tennis, but I don’t
think three players are going to win 66 of the next however many Slams, so
there’s a much better runway for her,” he said.
“With different women’s winners at the four Slams this year, there’s an
intriguing level of parity.
“It seems to be building towards men’s tennis in the '80s,
where you had a bunch of players with the potential to win a handful, rather
than everything resting on one or two people.”
