America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has revealed that her improved outing at
Wimbledon was due to her learning a lot about
‘life’.
The 20-year-old is often regarded as one of the most
highly-rated young players currently playing in women’s tennis in the singles
category. She recently lived up to the hype after winning her first Grand Slam.
She lifted the US Open after beating the former world number one Belarus’ Aryna
Sabalenka in the final with a score of 2–6,
6–3, 6–2.
Gauff is currently participating in Wimbledon 2024, where she has already booked her place in the third round after beating Anca Todoni in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1. The Atlanta-born, while talking to the media after the match, talked about how she has managed to improve her performance this year in a competition in which she was knocked out from the first round in
2023.
Gauff stated that one of the reasons is that she has learned
a lot in the past year, something which is helping her going forward. “I think
overall I just learned about life a lot,” she said. “I guess it’s what you do
as you get older. What I do I’m passionate about but it’s not ever that
serious. The world can make you feel like there’s so much pressure and
expectation. At the end of the day it’s a game, it’s sport. I’m very very
privileged and honored to be playing in front of you guys. This is the court
where I first started here at Wimbledon. Court 1 is always a special place for
me to play.”
Gauff’s opponent in the second round will be Britain’s Sonay
Kartal. The 22-year-old defeated France’s Clara Burel in the round of 64 with a
score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Interestingly, it will be the first-ever meeting between
the two players in professional tennis.
