Coco Gauff withdraws from Wuhan after tough Beijing defeat as defending champion cites fatigue

Coco Gauff won her fourth WTA 1000 title at Wuhan Open
Coco Gauff has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open just days after suffering a disappointing defeat at the China Open, meaning the American will not defend the title she won at the tournament in 2024. Gauff cited fatigue for her decision, bringing an early end to her participation in the Asian swing after a physically demanding period.
The withdrawal comes after a difficult few days for the 22-year-old, who was eliminated by Elise Mertens in the Beijing round of 16. Gauff lost 6-3, 6-3 in her earliest exit from the China Open after reaching at least the semifinals in each of her previous three appearances.
The defeat also ended Gauff's perfect record against Mertens. The Belgian had lost each of their previous five meetings, but produced a convincing performance to defeat the American for the first time and advance to the quarterfinals in Beijing.
Gauff's decision to skip Wuhan also comes at an important stage of the season. She has already qualified for the WTA Finals after accumulating enough points during the year, but with only a handful of weeks remaining, managing her physical condition will be important as she prepares for the season-ending event.

Gauff admits her body needs time to recover

Gauff explained that fatigue was behind her decision to withdraw from Wuhan, where she was due to return as defending champion. The American has had a demanding season and also faced considerable attention away from the court in recent days, making the decision to step away from competition understandable.
“I'm disappointed to withdraw from Wuhan, especially as the defending champion. I always love playing there. After a long year, my body needs some time to rest and recover. I look forward to returning next year.”
The Wuhan tournament responded to Gauff's announcement by thanking the American and wishing her well. Her withdrawal means the event will lose one of its biggest attractions, while Gauff will have an opportunity to rest before deciding when to return to competition.
The timing is particularly notable because Gauff's Beijing campaign ended with clear signs of physical difficulty. During her loss to Mertens, the American could be heard expressing frustration about her energy levels as she tried to get through the match.
“I have no energy. I'm trying, I have no energy. I can't see the ball, I feel like I'm going to pass out. I'm going to just try to finish the match.”
Gauff ultimately completed the contest, but the defeat ended a strong record in Beijing. She had previously reached the semifinals in 2023 and 2025 and won the tournament in 2024, making this year's round-of-16 exit a significant step back compared with her previous appearances.

Gauff turns attention toward WTA Finals

Despite the disappointment in Beijing, Gauff has already secured her place at the WTA Finals, meaning her season-ending objective is not in doubt. She joined Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka, who qualified earlier, before Mirra Andreeva and Jessica Pegula also secured their places alongside the American.
Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova is also virtually guaranteed a place, although her qualification is not yet mathematically confirmed. That leaves only two positions still to be decided, with Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova currently occupying the final qualifying spots in the Race.
Iga Swiatek and Marta Kostyuk remain among those capable of disrupting the current order. Swiatek in particular has a strong opportunity to close the gap after reaching the quarterfinals in Beijing, but she needs a significant result between Beijing and Wuhan to put herself firmly into contention.
For Gauff, however, the immediate priority is different. Rather than chasing additional ranking points in Wuhan, the American has chosen to give her body time to recover after a demanding stretch of the season.
Her withdrawal also ends the possibility of another title defense in China. Gauff won the Wuhan title in 2024 and had developed a strong record in the Chinese swing, but this time the American has decided that rest is more important than extending her campaign.
With the WTA Finals already secured, Gauff can now take a step back and prepare for the final major objective of her season. After a difficult Beijing exit and a physically demanding year, the American will hope the additional recovery time allows her to return at full strength when the biggest event remaining on her calendar arrives.
