The Australian Open finalist continued her great run in Miami with another decisive win as she rolled Zvonareva 6-1 6-4.
Collins has not played since the Dubai Tennis Championships where she suffered an injury but so far her return has been nothing short of spectacular. The American is playing the best tennis in her career in 2022 and things are looking good in Miami as well. After battling past Bondar in round Collins looked much sharper in this match.
There were no signs of rust and generally the American looked like the far superior player compared to the veteran Zvonareva whose career is essentially coming to an end. Collins did not serve well in this match but it did not hamper her play at all. Once the rallies developed, she had the upper hand forcing Zvonareva out of rhythm.
The first set went 6-1 to Collins as she only dropped four points on her own serve. She used two of three break points she had toward the quick finish. The 2nd set opened with an early break for Collins as she continued doing much of the same things that brought her the result in the first set. Zvonareva eventually battled back to make it 3-3 complicating matters a little bit.
For a while, the Russian gave Collins quite a bit of trouble forcing her to play a lot longer than she would have hoped. In the end, she was able to escape in two sets winning the 2nd 6-4.
