Danielle Collins became the latest seed to lose at
Roland Garros losing to
Shelby Rogers 4-6 3-6 in what has been a long struggle for her.
Collins is generally a solid clay layer but she has been abysmal since the Australian Open run unable to have a good run at all. Facing Rogers on clay should have been an easy job for her, yet she completely bombed this event like many other seeds. It's been an embarrassment for the WTA to watch the stars of the game crash out against lower-ranked player without putting up a good fight.
Collins tried, at least in the first set. She fell behind 0-4 after a terrible start unable to keep the ball in play. There is not much variety to her game so she was always going to win or lose with her groundstrokes. It was plenty of losing early on but some life showed after that. She battled back all the way to 4-4 after some solid play but then threw it all away on her serve once more.
Rogers finished it off with 6-4 to secure the opening set. True to her style, Collins completely shut off in the 2nd set unable to get anything going. It's not uncommon for her to simply stop caring and give a match away and she did that in the 2nd set. Roger simply played it cool and finished off the major upset at the
French Open.
