Danielle Collins to Iga Swiatek during their match at the Olympics: “There’s like no one behind me. Play at the servers pace.” Definitely a lot of tension in this match.
Danielle Collins left her final Olympic Games in controversial circumstances with the American smashing a return straight at Iga Swiatek. As well as calling her out for 'fakeness' and being insincere in terms of her injury.
But she has detailed further the circumstances surrounding her travails during the tie. In particular an abdomen injury which was evident during her doubles.
She was seen playing soon after despite being hampered in the doubles alongside Desirae Krawczyk losing out. But in particular, she was underarming serving. The American though said that it was a miracle she even played doubles.
She was seen asking for water during the tie and said that she suffered a heat stroke. She retired 4-1 down in the final set saying she couldn't do it anymore.
"I’ve asked kindly can you please help me get some water. We have 60 seconds on this changeover. Can you please help me get water? Thank you," she was reportedly heard saying during the match.
She said that she had a three hour session in medical after she was defeated and nearly collapsed when she came off court. So in reality, it was a minor miracle that she even played doubles.
Some have used the heat in Paris to thrive. Others such as Anna Karolina Schmiedlova have looked close to collapsing but still won through. So some are very much suffering but still winning. While Collins seemed to have issues when it mattered most which derailed her bid.
"I had a heat stroke. Nearly collapsed when I came off court, and I was on a medical table for three hours," said Collins.
"I wasn’t able to receive cool water during the entire match. Didn’t have insulated bottles. I overheated, having full body convulsions and somehow played doubles. The conditions here have been brutal. And I suffered the consequences of that last night and today."
