Danielle Collins achieved yet another milestone with her
impressive performance at the
Madrid Open. The 30-year-old is going through an
incredible patch in her career, especially after she earlier announced that she
would be retiring at the end of the ongoing season.
Collins booked her place in the round of 16 of the ongoing
WTA 1000 event in the Spanish capital after beating Jaqueline Cristian with a
score of 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday. With that win, she joined an elite list of players
who managed to win 15 straight matches after turning 30. The list contained the
likes of former world number one and legendary players like
Serena Williams, Martina
Navratilova and Chris Evert.
Before coming to Madrid, Collins secured back-to-back titles.
She first lifted the Miami Open after beating Elena Rybakina in the final in
straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Later, she lifted the Charleston Open
after getting the better of Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in the final in straight sets
with a score of 6-2, 6-1. Collins is now set to face off against the current world number
two Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of the mega-event on Tuesday.
Interestingly, this will be the first time that both players will face off on
the tennis court.
