Danielle Collins won her 2nd career title by defeating Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-7(10-12) 6-1.
The American is enjoying the best year on the tour in 2021 and she now has 2 career titles. Her first came not long ago in Palermo on clay and now her 2nd came back home in the States in front of her fans. The opponent was a tricky one in Kasatkina who is also enjoying a very good year but Collins was able to overcome her in three difficult sets.
The start of the match featured good play by both. Kasatkina was the first to have a break point but after failing to use it she gifted Collins one and the American took it. It was 6-3 for Collins who was almost unplayable on her own serve. The 2nd set was one of the best players played on the WTA tour this year.
It lasted well over an hour (77 minutes) and featured amazing play by both. Collins had an early 3-1 lead which she threw away late in the set by squandering two match points. We ended up in a tiebreak where Kasatkina threw away a 4-1 lead. She then saved 3 more match points and finally won it with 12-10.
Unfortunately for the Russian that was all she could give as she was completely flat in the 3rd. Collins who proved in better shape smashed her in the final set with 6-1 as the Russian had no energy left to compete with the intensity of Collins. A 2nd career trophy for Collins who looks in great shape ahead of a crucial part of the season.
