The revamped 18-nation Davis Cup Finals which was launched last year in Madrid will not take in a 2020 iteration with it taking place in 2021 instead.
The
Women's Fed Cup similarly has moved with the event now moved from April this year to the same time next year; it was an event which was set to implement 12 nation finals and restructuring; with the event taking in Budapest.
Tennis is set to return with a bumper calendar including the US Open and Roland Garros set to take place in quick succession; but for the Davis Cup in particular, they have already taken the decision not to take place this year.
"It's a huge disappointment"
Gerard Pique, who plays for Barcelona and runs Kosmos; the investment firm behind the Davis Cup; discussed the news:
“It’s a huge disappointment for all of us that the Davis Cup Finals will not be held in 2020,” Pique said in a joint statement with the ITF.
“We don’t know how the situation will develop in each qualified nation; or if restrictions in Spain will remain sufficiently eased; as such it is impossible to predict the situation in November and guarantee the safety of those travelling to Madrid.”
“This is a tough decision to have to make; but delivering an international team event on this scale; while guaranteeing the health and safety of all involved ultimately poses too great a risk,” ITF President David Haggerty said.
