Statement about the CAS decision:
World no. 29 Dayana Yastremska will not compete at this year's Australian Open, as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) dismissed her appeal, which means that Dayana flew to Melbourne in vain.
Despite the provisional suspension, Dayana took a shot and traveled to Melbourne, experiencing a two-week quarantine without leaving the room and hoping for her doping ban to be lifted. Yastremska failed the doping test following the urine sample provided on November 24 last year.
The sample was sent to the World Anti-Doping Agency ("WADA") accredited laboratory in Montreal for analysis, showing banned substance mesterolone metabolite. The 20-year-old took the case to CAS after the International Tennis Federation refused to lift the ban. Dayana's appeal was dismissed, and the Aussie will not compete at the season's first Major.
"Following a decision by the Chair of the Independent Tribunal to deny an application to lift the provisional suspension imposed on her on 7 January 2021 under Article 8.3.1(c) of the 2020 Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, Dayana Yastremska (UKR) appealed that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS has dismissed that appeal. Ms. Yastremska therefore remains ineligible to compete, pending the final resolution of her case," the ITF stated.
