Osaka battles back to reach Washington semi-finals

Naomi Osaka overcame a difficult start to defeat Elisabetta Cocciaretto in three sets and reach the DC Open semi-finals. The Japanese star struggled early as Cocciaretto took advantage of her opportunities, but Osaka gradually found her rhythm and turned the match around with a stronger performance in the second half.
Cocciaretto claimed the opening set 6-4 after repeatedly putting pressure on Osaka’s serve and taking control of several important rallies. However, despite a low first-serve percentage of just 47%, Osaka remained effective behind her delivery, avoided conceding any break points throughout the match and continued to dominate once rallies became longer.
The turning point arrived in the second set, when Osaka raised her level and found the breakthrough at a crucial moment to force a deciding set. Carrying that momentum forward, the four-time Grand Slam champion took control of the final frame, creating pressure on Cocciaretto’s serve and closing out another comeback victory to move into the final four.
These are Osaka's 3rd semifinals in 2026. The 4-time Grand Slam champion has not won titles since the 2021 Australian Open.
Shnaider powers past Samsonova into semi-finals

Diana Shnaider continued her impressive run in Washington with a convincing straight-sets victory over Liudmila Samsonova, securing her place in the semi-finals. The fourth seed controlled the match from the beginning, using her powerful left-handed game to dictate play and prevent Samsonova from settling into a rhythm.
Shnaider immediately took control of the opening set by building an early double-break advantage. Samsonova managed to recover one of the breaks and briefly threatened a comeback, but Shnaider remained calm under pressure and closed out the set 6-3 after consistently finding success in the longer rallies.

Eala continues dream Washington run with Svitolina upset

Alexandra Eala continued her remarkable DC Open campaign with another statement victory, defeating former World No. 3 Elina Svitolina in straight sets to reach the semi-finals. The Filipina had already stunned defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the previous round, and she backed up that result with another mature performance against one of the most experienced players remaining in the draw.
The opening set was a rollercoaster battle dominated by breaks of serve, with neither player able to find consistency behind their delivery. Eala secured her entry into the WTA Rankings top-25 for the first time in her career.
