The defending champion is no more at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells with Anett Kontaveit winning 7-6(5) 6-3.
It was a very good match between Kontaveit and Andreescu in the desert with both players playing some great tennis. The first set was a fierce battle between two players who arrived here in very different forms. Kontaveit has been playing stunning tennis in the past few weeks with Andreescu less so but today she rose to the occasion and played her best match in a while. It still wasn't enough so let's break down what happened.
The first set was a proper battle between both of them as the conditions were difficult for both. Slight wind was blowing which allowed for little variety in the games of both. The tactic was to smash the ball as hard as you can and initially it worked for Andreescu. She was up 2-0 and then the misses came. 2-0 turned to 2-4 rather quickly and after narrowly escaping a double break deficit she battled back to make it 5-5.
An amazing tiebreak followed with 9 of the 12 points being won by the receiving player resulting in Kontaveit winning it 7-5. It was over an hour long and a major coup for the Estonian. At the start of the 2nd set, Andreescu played her best tennis of the day to take a 3-1 lead. She would not hold it long enough as she started making errors again.
Kontaveit pulled it back to 3-3 and the conditions turned for the worse with the wind picking up again. The rest of the match was played in very tough conditions with major wind disrupting play and in that madness, it was Kontaivet who proved calmer closing it out with 6-3.
