Former world number one
Boris Becker believes Angelique
Kerber’s success after her potential return will depend on a number of factors
including patience.
The 35-year-old is set to return to the court after a gap of
nearly two years as she was out of action because of fitness concerns and
pregnancy. Becker, who is often termed as one of the greatest players from
Germany to have played tennis, is excited to see his fellow countrywoman returning
to the court but questions whether she will have the patience needed to succeed
at the highest level.
"It's incredibly great news that the last German number
one, the last German Wimbledon winner, is coming back," says Becker. "She
is the mother of two children and played a fantastic US Open (a narrow
three-set defeat in the round of 16 against the eventual winner Coco Gauff). So
it's possible.
In any case, Kerber is at an age “where he can still do it
physically.” The question, however, is: "Does she have the patience, does
she have the endurance? Does she have the nerve to accept one or two defeats at
the beginning in order to then have match practice with a view to the grass
season?"
Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam winner herself and also
reached the very top of the WTA rankings in September 2016. Her first major title
at the highest level was the Australian Open in 2016 where she defeated the
former world number one America’s Serena Williams in the final with a score of 6–4,
3–6, 6–4.
The same year, Kerber went on to win the US Open as well as she
defeated Czech Republic’s Karolína Pliskova in the final with a score of 6–3,
4–6, 6–4. In 2018, the Bremen-born won the Wimbledon title after once again beating
Serena in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
