Raising two daughters who would grow up to become legendary WTA icons is no small feat, but Richard Williams, father of Serena Williams and Venus Williams was able to achieve this, although he believed one would be better than the other, according to Rick Macci.
The renown American tennis coach helped train Venus and Serena during the early years of their careers, from 1991-1995 at the Macci Academy. Macci has also coached several top players, including former World No.1 Andy Roddick and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin.
The 69-year old coach took to social media to divulge whom Richard believed would be the better player between his two daughters, stating the proud father would tell everyone on the training team that despite being younger, he felt Serena could become a better player than Venus one day.
"The Compton Comedian King Richard would Tell All Of Us When We Were On Court he thought Serena Could be better than Venus someday but Do Not EVER tell VW. LOVE THIS GUY. @serenawilliams," Macci wrote on Twitter.
This correlates with a scene in the recent film, King Richard, which focuses on Richard's journey to train his two daughters. In the scene, Richard (played by Will Smith) tells a young Serena that he believes that she would surpass Venus and go on to become the greatest player of all time.
