Harriet Dart was widely criticised for her comment which was widely panned during the
Rouen Open where she suffered a heavy defeat to
Lois Boisson. She asked the umpire "Can you tell her to wear deodorant?" but the Frenchwoman saw the funny side in the end.
She went on to be hammered 6-0, 6-3 but the clip soon started doing the rounds and prompted a quick apology from the Brit on social media who was widely criticised.
Dart removed the ability for people to comment on her Instagram and issued an apology on her social media and called it heat of the moment.
"Hey everyone, I want to apologise for what I said on court today, it was a heat-of-the-moment comment that I truly regret. That's not how I want to carry myself, and I take full responsibility. I have a lot of respect for Lois and how she competed today. I'll learn from this and move forward. Harriet."
But Boisson herself seemingly didn't take it too personally as she photoshopped a Dove deodorant in her hand of an image of her playing on clay. She tagged the brand and said: "Dove apparently we need a collab" with laughing emoji faces.
While Dart will go home, Boisson who received a wildcard for this week will face either Moyuka Uchijima or Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round in France. She sits in the same section as Linda Fruhvirtova or Olga Danilovic.
Whether she now gets a sponsorship will remain to be seen but it is good to see she shows a funny side amid a moment that was widely panned and could've been taken very differently.
