The 2022 WTA 500 event in Berlin once again brings us a strong field even though initially it was meant to be even stronger before Swiatek, Badosa and Osaka pulled out.
The event will still be a very strong one with Ons Jabeur as the top seed and Maria Sakkari as the 2nd seed with many other greats such as Pliskova, Muguruza, and Gauff in attendance as well. Jabeur will have a very tough job as she faces the very tricky Karolina Muchova in round one. The Czech player has a bomb of a serve and she is tough to beat.
Sakkari will face qualifier Jeanjean who wowed many at Roland Garros recently. If she wins that one she might face either Saville or Teichmann. Other interesting 1st round matchups include Petkovic - Muguruza, Pliskova - Kanepi, Siniakova - Andreescu and Sabalenka - Kudermetova. Check out the full draw below.

- I heartily disagree with Stubbs here. I mean c'mon! The whole idea of giving out wildcards is to give new & up-coming players a chance at getting as much circuit match-practice under their belts as possible. And this is a HUGE must and opportunity for these new kids on the block. Why curtail opportunities for these newbies in favour of stalwart monopoly?? That just isn't fair. At least give these lesser known players a chance to become more familiar at playing in bigger tournaments & give them also a chance of getting the crowds behind these underdogs.
