The draw for the WTA 250 Transylvania Open, set to take place from 3–9 February, has been released, featuring the much-anticipated return of former world No. 1 Simona Halep. The Romanian star is back on court after a four-month absence and will make her first appearance in a tournament in her home country since 2021.

Top seeds include Anastasia Potapova, Olga Danilovic, Peyton Stearns, and Alycia Parks. Meanwhile, Denmark’s Clara Tauson was originally confirmed in the draw but withdrew shortly before the official announcement after reaching the semi-finals in Linz.

Halep set for Romanian comeback

Simona Halep is arguably the most anticipated player for the local crowd, as she makes her first tournament appearance in her native Romania since 2021. That year, she reached the final of the Transylvania Open but fell to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit. This time, she will debut against Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti, who made headlines just a few weeks ago by upsetting Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the Australian Open.

Top seed Anastasia Potapova will take on Julia Grabher in the upper half of the draw. Meanwhile, one of the most exciting first-round matchups will be in the bottom half, where Australian Open surprise Olga Danilovic—who knocked out Jessica Pegula in the third round—will face talented American Alycia Parks.

American rising star Peyton Stearns, the third seed, will begin her campaign against the experienced Varvara Gracheva. The winner of that match could potentially meet the winner of the Bronzetti-Halep clash.

Fourth seed Anhelina Kalinina will take on local wildcard Elena-Gabriela Ruse, while fifth seed Katerina Siniakova awaits a qualifier.
