The draw has been confirmed ahead of the WTA Rome Open which is due to take place between Tuesday May 6 - Saturday May 17 and forms the last big tournament before Roland Garros begins at the end of May.
Aryna Sabalenka is top seed, while Iga Swiatek is defending champion. They faced off in the final last year, but while Swiatek ordinarily dominates on the surface it has been less of a foregone conclusion this year.
She faltered in Stuttgart against familiar nemesis Jelena Ostapenko and then lost out in Madrid damningly to Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-1. It was learned that she had just lost her grandfather in the days prior but Swiatek could yet become World No.4 in the coming week.
Gauff and also Jessica Pegula loom ready to take that World No.2 spot off her so that is also a level of intrigue. Also involved include Jasmine Paolini, the home hero as well as Mirra Andreeva, Madison Keys, Zheng Qinwen and Emma Navarro.
Of the opening ties for the big names, Sabalenka could finally face Anastasia Potapova. The latter withdrew from their Stuttgart tie with injury. Sabalenka then went on to lose the final to Ostapenko. It will either be Potapova or Dayana Yastremska.
Zheng Qinwen in the other seed in this section and faces Olga Danilovic or Katerina Siniakova. Other ties include Elena Rybakina facing Moyuka Uchijima or Eva Lys. Donna Vekic also could face the returning Bianca Andreescu.
Coco Gauff is fourth seed as she has only just retaken World No.3 today. She faces either Arianna Zucchini or a qualifier. The likely opponent is Belinda Bencic further on but she has a good run in. Emma Raducanu will likely ace Ekaterina Alexandrova again after she takes on a qualifier. Emma Navarro will face either the returning Marketa Vondrousova or Xinyu Wang. Mirra Andreeva too faces Viktoriya Tomova or a qualifier.
Jasmine Paolini on home soil faces either Giorgia Pedone or Lulu Sun. While Jessica Pegula could face Ashlyn Krueger in the second round. Swiatek also faces a potentially tricky test as she faces Elina Avanesyan or Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Naomi Osaka fresh off winning Saint Malo faces Sara Errani. The winner faces Paula Badosa. Madison Keys faces Varvara Gracheva or a qualifier.
