Elina Svitolina won the 9th match in a row to book the quarter-final of Roland Garros (French Open) extending her incredible run in the past few weeks.
It all started with a trophy in Strasbourg which gave her a lot of confidence after some weeks of struggling. Things fell in place nicely since then at Roland Garros as she played really well to win a couple of matches to advance to the 4th round where she defeated Daria Kasatkina in straight sets today.
There was no handshake at the end of the match which was expected but the match itself was plenty interesting. Svitolina took an early 3-1 lead in the opening set extending it to a 4-1 lead but also giving the second break back. From there it was a rather comfortable cruised towards the end of the set.
The Ukrainian player didn't face a single break point since losing that serve in the first set but she did get broken at the start of the second set. Kasatkina was up 2-0, but she also allowed her opponent to battle back into the match. It was a very up-and-down set though Svitolina had a chance to serve it out at 5-4. She didn't get it done allowing Kasatkina a chance but then broke her again for the 6-5 lead.
A second attempt at serving it out failed with a tiebreak coming after that. It was close and it was competitive but the Ukranian was able to get it done with a superb finish 7-5. Just a very strudy prformance from Svitolina who was aggressive forcing Kasatkina to play the same way. The Russian had too many errors though. Only 19 winners and 46 unforced errors compared to Svitolina's 20 and 42 line.
