Elina Svitolina credits dedication to health for incredible 10-match winning streak - "This is the priority right now"

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has booked her spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Madrid Open, as she continues to show why she's one of the best players on clay right now.
The former World No.3 defeated former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the third round in Madrid. Svitolina would then proceed to take down resurgent Greek star Maria Sakkari to reach the final eight at the WTA 1000 event.

Svitolina has not dropped a set on clay this season
Prior to competing in Madrid, the 2018 WTA Finals champion kicked off her European clay court campaign with a title run at the Rouen Open. Svitolina breezed through the competition, winning her first title of the season without dropping a set.
The 30-year old picked off where she left off, as the trend has continued at the Caja Magica. Svitolina is yet to drop a set at the WTA 1000 event, and is now riding a 10-match winning streak without dropping a set into her quarterfinal showdown with rising Japanese star Moyuka Uchijima.
"I tried to work really hard to find my level," revealed the 17th-seeded Ukrainian. "Really happy I could do it on the clay so early.. because it’s not easy to transition from hard courts to clay. But I’m very happy with my performance so far. I’m trying to stay healthy. This is the priority right now. I’ll try to refocus for the next match."
Growing up in a household where soccer was king, my earliest memories are filled with chants from packed stadiums and the rhythm of a ball being passed across neighborhood streets. But somewhere along the way, the quiet elegance and raw emotion of tennis pulled me in. What began as a curiosity became a lifelong passion; not just for the sport itself, but for the stories it tells: of grit, of heartbreak, of improbable comebacks and human resilience.
As a tennis writer, I bring the observational lens of someone who didn’t grow up in the sport, but fell in love with it as an outsider; a perspective that lets me see both its technical beauty and its emotional depth. Over the years working with TennisUpToDate, I’ve had the privilege of reaching more than 3.5 million readers worldwide, with one of my features ranking among the site’s top three articles.
With a background in storytelling and a creative mind always searching for meaning beyond the scoreboard, I aim to craft narratives that go deeper than results and rankings. Whether it’s a rising star breaking through or a veteran fighting off Father Time, I try to capture the heartbeat behind the headlines.
