Elina Svitolina earned a hard-fought victory over Alize Cornet in the Chicago Women's Open final besting the French player 7-5 6-4.
Elina Svitolina played a very up and down season which has been filled with some awful performances as well as some highlights. Had the Ukrainian not won the bronze medal at the Olympics her 2021 tennis highlight would have been her marriage to Gael Monfils.
Indicating that her form is picking up a bit she stormed past everyone at the Chicago Women's Open winning her 16th career title and first in 2021. Her opponent Cornet came out flat in the match falling behind 0-3 rather quickly. After that she finally found some rhythm pulling it back to 3-3.
Cornet applied significant pressure forcing Svitolina to save four break points in the remainder of the set which she did. That prompted a collapse by Cornet who would lose her serve one game away from the tiebreak ending the first set 7-5 for Svitolina.
The 2nd set started off with a 3-0 lead for Svitolina once again but Cornet continued to fight. She would break Svitolina three consecutive times but each time she would get broken in return. The last break she suffered ended the match with 6-4 to Svitolina in the 2nd set.
