Former British number one
Tim Henman believes that young
Emma Raducanu will take ‘so many positives’ from her run at the
Miami Open. The
22-year-old, who was once regarded as the next big thing after winning the US
Open at the age of just 18 in 2021, was eventually knocked out from the ongoing
WTA 1000 event in Miami Open after losing to the 2024 US Open runner-up America’s
Jessica Pegula with a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
Henman spoke to Sky Sports after the match, where he praised
the performance of the former world number 10 in the competition. He was of the
opinion that Raducanu had a good match but she lost to a ‘better player’ on the
day. Henman also stated that Raducanu will take ‘so many positives’ from her
run at the competition.
“Emma played a really, really good match but she lost to the
better player,” he said. “She fought so hard. You know, two very tight, first
two sets. I thought Emma did so well to get that second set. She looked a little
bit fatigued but she started being more aggressive to try and keep the points
short, looking to take the game to Pegula. When she got that second set, you
thought there is a chance but Pegula showed her hard court experience and you
know just raised that level. So full credit to Pegula for getting through to the
semifinals but there is no doubt that Raducanu will be take so many positives
from her run in Miami.”
Raducanu talked to TennisOne, as quoted by Yahoo Sports, where she admitted that she struggled in the third set. “I just felt really dizzy,” she
said. “I felt faint. It was very humid out there and we had a long wait, so
maybe it was just an accumulation. [There were] just physical points as well,
with long rallies and heavy conditions. I don’t know how I kind of regrouped in
that second set but, in the third, I definitely struggled a little bit.”
