Madrid WTA 1000 Updates: Karolina Pliskova and Marie Bouzkova have withdrawn - Siniakova now plays Podoroska and Raducanu plays a qualifier/lucky loser
The main tie picked out for the first round at the 2024 Madrid Open on the WTA side was Emma Raducanu who as ever is a talking point facing off against Karolina Pliskova in a pretty nice route aside from that and it has just got slightly easier.
The Madrid Open will take place between April 23 - May 5 at the famous Caja Magica in the beautiful Spanish city and Raducanu has benefited not only from a late wildcard. But also she has benefited from Pliskova withdrawing late.
The former World No.1 who won a title in one of the only other clay court tournaments of the season in Cluj will in fact not play at the Madrid Open with both the Czech ace and also Marie Bouzkova withdrawing from the tournament. Katerina Siniakova who was due to face the latter will now take on Nadia Podoroska. The winner of that tie faces 19th seed Emma Navarro.
While in the Raducanu section, it will be a qualifier or lucky loser awaiting the Brit. She will then face Veronika Kudermetova if she gets through that. A good thought for Raducanu given that she has shown superb prowess as of late on the surface and has shown in Stuttgart and France that her game is very much there. Especially given that just a year ago, her injury hell began with surgery just after this tournament. She also was added to the field last minute this week likely due to IMG who manage her owning the tournament.
