Eugenie Bouchard is the latest to aim a dig at
Iga Swiatek amid the ongoing doping row which saw the former World No.1 banned for one month for taking the substance trimetazidine (TMZ).
The conjecture that has surrounded the case is that Swiatek said that she didn't know and Kyrgios expressed disapproval saying that her explanation was an 'excuse'. The Aussie jokingly stated that top players could easily avoid accountability by merely saying they didn't know.
"The excuse that we can all use is that we didn’t know. Simply didn’t know. Professionals at the highest level of sport can now just say “we didn’t know," Kyrgios wrote.
Bouchard chimed back to Kyrgios' opinion taking a dig at Swiatek saying: "Guess so". Kyrgios and Shapovalov who have commented on this one too were also heavily vociferous during the Jannik Sinner case.
A case that is technically still ongoing as Sinner has had his initial verdict which saw him not get banned for taking Clostebol through a massage sent to CAS after WADA appealed the verdict. Swiatek is technically serving her ban right now until early December with mostly it being retrospective so 22 of the days were previously served.
But WADA still has a window of opportunity to appeal the verdict. "The product does not have the same designation globally, and the fact that a product is a regulated medication in one country cannot of itself be sufficient to avoid any level of fault. Taking into account the nature of the medication, and all the circumstances, it does place that fault at the lowest end of the scale," ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse said in an official statement.
Swiatek has said herself that she wants to move on from this after what has been a harrowing time in her career. But it is unlikely to be an issue that goes away with press conferences in the coming months likely to ask about it and continued spotlight shone on the current state of anti-doping in the sport being questioned.
