Lys ended 2025 as top-50 player
Eva Lys was on the end of some nasty messages being sent her direction by someone on Instagram after she lost 7-6(6), 6-3 against Emma Navarro in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open.
This could have been a different story on home soil for Lys who did not take her chances when they came. Instead, Navarro took command and strode to victory while booking one of the final spots in the last-16. The American is coming off the back of a final at the Nottingham Open, losing out to Marie Bouzkova in a thrilling three-set clash.
She stole a march with a break of serve to go 3-2 ahead. At 5-3 on the German's serve, Navarro created three consecutive set points. None of them were taken and the game after Lys managed to get the match back on serve.
Unfortunately, the roles were reversed in the tiebreak. Lys led 6-3 and had three chances to see out the set. None of them were taken as Navarro won five points in a row to win the first set.
She put the pressure on in the second, breaking with her fourth break point of the set as she strode 4-1 ahead, Two set points were missed on the Lys serve before a hold to love in the very next game sent Lys tumbling out of her home tournament and Navarro progressing with none other than reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek her next opponent in Bad Homburg.

Lys reacts to hate comments after loss

Lys has been subject to comments on social media before, calling them and the user out. She did that again today following the defeat. An Instagram user going by the name Austin had been repeatedly messaging her writing "I love you."
His tone soon turned following the defeat at Bad Homburg. "You are f*****g dog s**t," he typed. "Serving for the set and you have s**t in your pants. I hope you die."
Lys, as expected, did not take well to the comments. She posted them on her Instagram story while writing: "Austin, we have to work on your moodswings."
This is not the first time Lys has called out someone online who has sent hate in her direction. After losing in the 2025 China Open quarter-final against Coco Gauff, she was on the end of some really horrible statements. One of which read: "I wish this w***e and her bigger w***e mother die the death of swines. f*****g match seller, you should bun in hell, s**t player. Your pathetic mother a w***e who had given birth to a w***e like you. I wish she died in your arms really soon."

Despite enjoying a brilliant week breaking new ground at WTA 1000 level, this was one of the responses she was met with. "And lets not forget the harsh reality whenever we lose a match," she wrote in response.
More tennis players are putting down their phones and switching off social media to not see the hate they may be on the end of. A lot of it comes from bettors losing out on money after the player they backed lost, taking their rage out on them. World number two Elena Rybakina recently opened up on why she disabled her Instagram page.
It is a problem that is still going on not just in tennis, but in all sports as the professional look for ways to not let this affect them.
