Fernandez flounders against Bencic, Swiss star powers through in Miami

It was a bad day at the office for Leylah Fernandez, who was dispatched of by Belinda Bencic on Friday at the 2023 Miami Open.

Bencic recorded an easy 6-1 6-1 win over the 2023 US Open runner-up, as Fernandez was unable to summon any facet of the game that saw her reach the final in New York. The Canadian failed to impress on serve, winning only 3 of 13 points behind her second serve.

Conversely, the Swiss star remained aggressive as she dictated play from the baseline. Bencic never faced a break point, and looked extremely comfortable throughout their 67 minute encounter.

The ninth seed advances to the third round, where she will face 18th seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.
