Canadian Leylah Fernandez stunned the tennis world with her amazing run to the 2021 US Open finals, but her father and coach, Jorge Fernandez, has stated that it's time to get back to work.
The 19-year old lost in the final British qualifier Emma Raducanu, who was writing a Cinderella story herself. However, en route to the final Fernandez knocked out defending champion Naomi Osaka, along with WTA heavyweights Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina.
“We are always proud when we have good results," said Jorge Fernandez. "Me, I am proud of my daughter regardless of whether she wins or loses. She never gave up (to become a pro)."
Despite his daughter's spectacular performance, Jorge believes that there is still more work to be done.
"Are we satisfied with a second place, or we say to ourselves that we had opportunities but that we did not do the necessary work for more? For us, a Grand Slam final doesn't change anything. We go back to work."
