Although she failed to lift the US Open trophy, runner-up Leylah Fernandez captured the hearts of millions with her passion and never-say-die attitude on the court.
The Canadian proved to be a giant killer, as she took down the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, former champion Angelique Kerber and defending champion Naomi Osaka. With the crowd roaring in support, Fernandez admitted that she harbored a desire to make fans happy, similar to how Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have captivated spectators throughout their illustrious careers.
“I remember when I was little and I watched Nadal and Federer’s matches and I saw how the fans behaved with that kind of attitude,” Fernandez said. “That kind of tennis and that’s what I want to bring to the court, the same energy from them, give the fans a smile and they can have a good time looking at my tennis.”
The 19-year old entered the US Open ranked World No.73, but rose to a career high of World No.28 following her spectacular run to the final.
