Former Wimbledon doubles champion Frederik Lochte Nielsen believes the Denish duo of
Clara Tauson and
Caroline Wozniacki will be able to reach the
second week at the US Open.
Both players will be in the main draw of the last Grand Slam
of the year which will begin in less than a monthโs time in New York.
Nielsen, who is also from Denmark, expressed optimism about
a good show from fellow Danish tennis players in the upcoming mega-event.
โI certainly believe that both Clara Tauson and Caroline
Wozniacki can reach the second week at the US Open,โ he said. โIt also depends
on the draw because both of them are unseeded. They could face tough opponents
in the first round.โ
โThey both have a
very high level of play. Claraโs top-level game deserves a lot of respect, and
with Caroline, weโll have to wait and see. Weโll get a better idea after
watching her in Canada and Cincinnati. But as Iโve always said, never
underestimate Caroline. She wouldnโt compete if she didnโt feel she could.โ
The 39-year-old also stated that the return of the former
world number one Wozniacki, who retired back in 2020, will be a big boost for tennis
in Denmark.
โ Itโs huge that she (Wozniacki) is going to play again.
Itโs going to be really great. Itโll be awesome to follow her again, and from a
Danish perspective, itโs just fantastic to have another player to follow at the
tournaments,โ said Nielsen.
โItโs absolutely superb to have three Danes in the main draw
of the US Open. Itโs damn huge. Itโs truly significant to have both Holger
Rune, Clara Tauson, and Caroline Wozniacki participating, especially because
they are competitive. These are three players who one can hope to see in the
second week of the various Grand Slams.โ
