Former Wimbledon doubles champion Frederik Lochte Nielsen believes the Denish duo of
Clara Tauson and
Caroline Wozniacki will be able to reach the
second week at the US Open.
Both players will be in the main draw of the last Grand Slam
of the year which will begin in less than a month’s time in New York.
Nielsen, who is also from Denmark, expressed optimism about
a good show from fellow Danish tennis players in the upcoming mega-event.
“I certainly believe that both Clara Tauson and Caroline
Wozniacki can reach the second week at the US Open,” he said. “It also depends
on the draw because both of them are unseeded. They could face tough opponents
in the first round.”
“They both have a
very high level of play. Clara’s top-level game deserves a lot of respect, and
with Caroline, we’ll have to wait and see. We’ll get a better idea after
watching her in Canada and Cincinnati. But as I’ve always said, never
underestimate Caroline. She wouldn’t compete if she didn’t feel she could.”
The 39-year-old also stated that the return of the former
world number one Wozniacki, who retired back in 2020, will be a big boost for tennis
in Denmark.
” It’s huge that she (Wozniacki) is going to play again.
It’s going to be really great. It’ll be awesome to follow her again, and from a
Danish perspective, it’s just fantastic to have another player to follow at the
tournaments,” said Nielsen.
“It’s absolutely superb to have three Danes in the main draw
of the US Open. It’s damn huge. It’s truly significant to have both Holger
Rune, Clara Tauson, and Caroline Wozniacki participating, especially because
they are competitive. These are three players who one can hope to see in the
second week of the various Grand Slams.”
