Serena is often regarded as the greatest player in the history
of women’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 23 Grand Slam
titles. She retired from the sport in September 2022 after having to deal with
fitness concerns.
Serena’s most successful competitions were the Australian
Open and Wimbledon where she lifted the title seven times each. Her first title
triumph was way back in 1999 when she lifted the US Open after beating
Switzerland’s Martina Hingis in the final with a score of 6–3, 7-6.
Her last major title was the Australian Open in 2017 as she
defeated sister Venus Williams in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-4,
6-4. Serena also ended up winning four Olympic gold medals for the US as well.
Out of those, three were after winning in the doubles category
— in Sydney (2000), Beijing (2008) and London (2012). Serena also won the singles
category at the London Olympics in 2012.
