Former World No.1 Garbine Muguruza has become a mother for the first time announcing that she had given birth last week to her first son Marcos Borges Muguruza with her husband who she met by chance in Central Park five years ago.
While Muguruza is now retired, the two-time Grand Slam champion seems happier than ever. The Spaniard has taken on new roles in the sport including being a tournament director as part of the Madrid Open this next year while she was also involved in the WTA Finals at the turn of the year in a similar role.
So while she has no desire or hunger to play again after a hiatus from the sport became retirement, it seems to have been the best decision for her. Alongside a picture of his feet and one hand, they wrote in a joint post: "Our little miracle. Marcos Borges Muguruza celebrates one week since his arrival."
Caroline Garcia, Flavia Pennetta, Carla Suarez Navarro were among those to comment on her post congratulating her with Aryna Sabalenka also among those to have liked the post. Muguruza met her future husband and now father to her child by chance. They bumped into each other in Central Park around the time of the US Open in 2021 and this chance meeting proved to be one that would change her course.

A love that was meant to be

They got engaged in 2023 before tying the knot in October 2024. "My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk," Muguruza previously said. "I go out and I run into him on the street. Suddenly, he turns and says; 'Good luck at the US Open'. I was left thinking; 'Wow, he's so handsome'."
He later proposed to Muguruza in Marbella, Spain after spending two years together. "It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying," she said. "I didn't know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic."
Being a huge name in Spanish sport, Muguruza shared images of her special day with the publication HOLA! and said that it was very much love at first sight. "It's a total movie," she said. "I knew I would marry him even before he asked me. When we met, it was love at first sight and we realised very quickly that we were an ideal couple."
So their romantic fairytale has its next chapter with a first arrival for the Muguruza Borges household. Congratulations to Garbine and Arthur on welcoming Marcos.
