The 2022 Credit One Charleston Open has received a boost in star power, as Grand Slam champions
Garbine Muguruza and
Simona Halep have joined the field for the 50th anniversary of the prestigious event.
The Charleston Open, which is the largest women's only tennis tournament in North America, is scheduled for April 2-10, 2022. The event showcases a singles draw of 56 players, a qualifying draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16 players. Additionally, fans will be on site for the first time since 2019 as the 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19, and the 2021 event played with no spectators on site.
Muguruza will be making her return to Charleston after withdrawing in the second round earlier this year, while Halep will be making her debut at the event.
“Garbiñe and Simona are two Grand Slam champions with accomplished careers,” said tournament director Bob Moran. “Garbiñe has had an amazing year, culminating in her historic title win at the season-ending WTA Finals. Simona is a player we have been looking forward to welcoming to Charleston for years, so we are excited to have her finally joining us in 2022.
“It’s going to be a big year for our tournament and these two players will certainly elevate the competition.”
The pair of former World No.1's will be joining WTA stars
Paula Badosa,
Belinda Bencic,
Leylah Fernandez,
Madison Keys and
Sloane Stephens at the star-studded event. Additional players who have committed to competing at the tournament in 2022 will be announced in the coming weeks.
