Caroline Garcia defeated
Anett Kontaveit in three sets while Schmiedlova stunned
Venus Williams once more at
Roland Garros.
The first day of the Roland Garros offered a multitude of exciting moments and matches and one such moment was when Schmiedlova defeated Venus Williams once more at the Roland Garros. The match was a very exciting one with many breakpoints and twists and turns where Schmiedlova came out on top 6-4 6-4.
This was the 2nd time at the Roland Garros that Venus lost to Schmiedlova. Venus didn't play a good match highlighted by the enormous amount of unforced errors she had. The players were similar in winners as Venus had 27 compared to Schmiedlova's 23 but the key to victory was the 47 unforced errors Venus had. Schmiedlova was much more composed and patient tallying only 24.
Caroline Garcia also secured a 2nd round berth with a victory against Anett Kontaveit in three sets. French players are known as very good at-home performers and Garcia is no different. The start of the set showed proved that point as Garcia played patient waiting for a mistake from the Estonian which she did midway through the set. Garcia went on to win the set 6-4. The 2nd set was much better from Anett where she played strong from the start breaking Garcia to take a 3-1 lead which she conveyed to 6-3 2nd set victory.
She continued to play well in the 3rd using the same tactic that worked in the 3rd set breaking Garcia in the 1st game and taking a 3-1 lead. Garcia fought back valiantly to make it 3-3. Her joy turned to ashes in the next game when Kontaveit struck back to take another lead and break 4-3. The next went largely like the previous one with the receiving player breaking the serving one allowing Garcia to take a 5-4 lead. A few minutes later it ended with Garcia breaking Kontaveit once more to secure the victory.
