Stan Wawrinka defeated
Andy Murray in the premier match of round 1 at the
Roland Garros while Paire defeated Sonnwoo.
When Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray got paired up in the 1st round of the Roland Garros many could not wait to see the match unfold. Not only was it a spectacular 1st round matchup it was also a callback to three years ago when Andy played his last match at the French Open. In that semifinal, he lost to Wawrinka as he did today.
It wasn't a good match by Andy who struggled on clay against Wawrinka who simply looked better in every facet of the game. From the start, Wawrinka looked more comfortable on the court and simply better. He smashed Andy in the opening set 6-1 and continued to play well in the next two. His serve worked well enough and he was very good on both his serves. He would allow Andy only three break points in the whole match, saving all of them. He won the 2nd set with 6-3 and the final one with 6-2 to advance to the next round after 100 minutes of play.
Benoit Paire returned to winning ways finally after his horrific restart to the season which saw him contract the coronavirus on top of his general lack of form prior and past the contraction. His opponent today was Sonnwoo and while the Korean was the slight favourite according to the odds the Frenchman controlled the whole match from start to finish. He finally resembled a player that was a top 20 player at one point cruising to a 7-5 6-4 6-4 victory.
Even though he won in straight sets it was far from an easy victory as he spent almost two and a half hours on the court, something he would have rather avoided. After all, he did retire only a few days ago citing exhaustion.
