Coco Gauff and
Eugenie Bouchard advanced to the 2nd round of the
Roland Garros after victories against Konta and Kalinskaya.
Coco Gauff returned to Paris and the Roland Garros in a bid to keep climbing through the ranks of the WTA rankings with some solid play. She showed more than solid tennis today against
Johanna Konta who rather enjoys playing on clay. Gauff started off very well in the match taking an early break which proved key in the 1st set. After the initial 2-0 lead, she continued playing well in the set maintaining her lead which she conveyed into a 6-3 1st set victory.
The 2nd set was a flurry of breakpoints as both player's had difficulties holding their serve against the opposition. Konta took an early 2-0 lead which she gave up not long after to make it 2-2. She would lose her serve once more to give Gauff a 4-2 lead. Gauff would eventually cruise to a 6-3 2nd set victory. Konta had chances in the 2nd set but she completely failed, losing 4 of the 5 serving games she had.
Eugenie Bouchard returned to Paris in winning fashion defeating Kalinskya in straight sets despite shaky play throughout the match. The first set was highlighted by shaky serving by both player's eventually resulting in Bouchard coming out on top with a 6-4 set victory. Kalinskaya had a chance as she broke Bouchard first but immediately lost her own serve to give Genie the momentum she lacked.
The 2nd set was a similar affair as Kalinskaya took the lead once more but again lost her serve immediately after. All in all, she would go on to lose her own serve three times in the 2nd set giving Bouchard the 6-4 2nd set victory as well. It was a good start for Bouchard but she will need to play much better if she wants to get a decent result in Paris.
