Coco Gauff kicked off her Western & Southern Open campaign with a quick victory over Su-Wei Hsieh, finally getting the win after an almost six-hour rain delay on Tuesday.
The American secured an easy 6-1 6-2 victory in exactly one hour, although the match was played with a long interval due to the inclement weather. Gauff raced to a 5-0 lead before proceedings had to stop due to rain, forcing the players to seek shelter in the locker room.
Upon resumption almost six hours later, Hsieh was able to win her first game of the match before Gauff closed it out with ease. The second set saw a glimmer of hope for the World No.73 as the score was tied at 2-2, but it was all in vain as Gauff took control and finished the match by winning the last four games.
The 17-year old looked focused and unbothered by both the rain and her opponent, dictating play from the baseline with her powerful groundstrokes. Hsieh's versatility could only do so much against the World No.23, as Gauff dominated for the bulk of the match before securing her spot in the next round.
