The tournament in Austria did not start ideally for the young American when she lost in the 2nd round of qualifying. But she got into the main draw as a lucky looser following the withdrawal of Maria Sakkari.
Yesterday when she spoke about the upcoming final match she spoke also about getting into the tournament as a lucky looser. “This is actually the first time in my life, including juniors, that I got into something as a lucky loser, and now I’m in the final."
On her way to the final she defeated Voegle, Kozlova, Bertens and Petkovic. Gauff started the final match better, when she earned a break in the 2nd game of the first set and won it 6-3.
However, Jelena Ostapenko dominated in the second set when she won it 6-1. But the 2 minute break between the 2nd and 3rd set helped Gauff to recover from the lost 2nd set.
She played her best tennis in the 3rd set and she won it 6-2 in the longest set of the match even though it took her only 37 minutes.
