Gauff overcomes Davis to reach Volvo Car Open quarterfinal

It was a solid showing from Gauff who was brilliant in the first set and very shaky in the 2nd set.

The whole endeavour took 93 minutes but Gauff emerged victorious against Davis winning 6-2 7-6(2). The young American came out furious in the first set taking a 3-0 lead. Davis would fight back to make it 3-2 but after that Gauff when on a 3-0 run to close out the opening set 6-2. It seemed like Gauff had everything under control but in the 2nd set madness ensued.

It was a very up and down set that featured 8 losses of serve in total. Davis played much better in the 2nd set breaking Gauff twice early. Unfortunately, she could not hold her serve so after four games it was 2-2. At 3-3, Davis once again broke Gauff and confirmed the break to make it 5-3.

It seemed we would go to three sets which we often see in Gauff matches but the American once again found a way to come back to make it 5-5. But consistent with the very inconsistent play she lost her serve once again to give Davis a chance to force the 3rd set but Davis lost her serve without winning a point.

We ended up in a tiebreak where Davis took a 2-0 advantage but then lost the next 7 points losing the match. It was a very inconsistent effort from Gauff who was brilliant in the opening set but also very up and down in the 2nd set.
