In one of the best matches of the week thus far, Coco Gauff overcame a brilliant effort from Bianca Andreescu to advance to the quarterfinals of the San Diego Open.
The American pulled off a 6-4 4-6 6-3 victory on Thursday night, halting an Andreescu comeback that saw the 2019 US Open titlist display some of her championship pedigree.
After claiming a relatively easy first set, Gauff was faced with some stiff resistance from Andreescu. The Canadian employed her spectacular shot-making ability and improved court coverage to fluster the 2022 French Open runner-up, obtaining a vital break that saw her level play and shock the partisan crowd.
Things were looking even worse for Gauff at the start of the decider, as Andreescu quickly broke the American to establish a 2-0 lead. However, Gauff fought back, saving two break points at 15-40 to get on the scoreboard. The 18-year old rode her momentum to level the score at 3-3 before obtaining the crucial break, and closed out the match after two and a half hours.
The sixth seed moves on to her eighth WTA quarterfinal of the season, where she will face World No.1 Iga Swiatek in a rematch of the 2022 Roland Garros final.
