Sonay Kartal waits to receive in practice
What was already an uphill task facing a strong Australian outfit in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers at Melbourne Park, Great Britain has been dealt another seismic blow with British number two Sonay Kartal pulling out of the tie due to lingering back issues picked up from the Sunshine swing.
Kartal was the standout name in what was already a very depleted Great Britain team. The contest was scheduled at an awkward time for the players, as it clashes with the start of the clay swing. This, along with the fact that it is a very long way to travel, meant that many of the top British talents have given it a miss.
This includes the top four-ranked players. British number one Emma Raducanu had always intended to focus on her WTA ranking as she committed to the Upper Ladies Austrian Linz. This is not the first time something similar to this has happened with her pulling out of featuring in the Billie Jean King Cup Finals last September to compete in the Korea Open. In fairness to the former US Open champion, she would likely have skipped this upcoming fixture anyway, with her still not totally over the virus picked up in the Middle East swing.
Katie Boulter and Francesca Jones had also pulled out of travelling halfway around the world to get a head start on clay as they look for a smooth transition to not get left behind by their rivals.

Kartal the latest British name to pull out

Mika Stojsavljevic, Harriet Dart, and Jodie Burrage were all originally listed to travel Down Under alongside Kartal. The winner of the tie would confirm their place in the finals held from September 21-27. This qualifying contest, played from April 10-11, is a hugely crucial matchup.
This makes it frustrating for team captain Anne Keothavong that her big guns are unable to make the trip. The latest to withdraw, Kartal, announced the news on Instagram amid an ongoing back issue. She pulled out of the Miami Open thanks to this problem after experiencing it enroute to the fourth round of Indian Wells.
“Had a feeling something wasn’t right with my back when I arrived in Miami and after having some scans it’s clear that I’m going to need a little more time to heal," she wrote. "Sadly means I won’t be joining the BJK girls in Australia but wishing them the best of luck for the tie. Gutted to be sidelined by already looking forward to being back out there soon, so thanks for all the messages and I’ll see you on the clay.”

Sonay Kartal joins Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu in not making the trip to Australia
Katie Swan will be the name to take the world number 55's place. A depleted British team will have its hands full against what is a very strong Aussie outfit. Talented youngster Maya Joint will lead her nation into battle, joined with Storm Hunter, Kimberly Birrell, Ellen Perez, and Talia Gibson. The latter has really emerged as a notable name in recent times.
Gibson was not even in the top 100 when she travelled to California with hopes to qualify for the WTA 1000 tournament. She would reach the quarterfinal stage before backing it up by qualifying for the Miami Open and blasting her way into the fourth round. The 21-year-old will be hopeful in replicating those events back in her native Australia.
