Simona Halep barely squeezed past Ajla Tomljanovic in the 2nd round of the
Australian Open as the native player served for the match.
It was 5-3 for Tomljanovic when she stepped up to the service line to try and win her service game in order to complete the stunning upset win over Simona Halep. She failed to win a single game in the rest of the match so Halep moves one after completing a stellar comeback victory. After the match Halep admitted to feeling nervous:
"That's why I was talking non-stop, and I was talking negative."
When she was on the brink of a defeat she managed to find some inspiration and played a loose style of tennis that allowed her to win 5 games in a row to win the final set 7-5. Asked about that she said:
"I talked to my team after the match, and they told me that I should have played like I did those games because my arms were more relaxed and the ball was going a little bit deeper. I didn't realize that but, you know, it's good that I ended like that and I got the confidence that I still can win these tough matches."
In the press conference after the match when asked to summarise the match she simply said:
"It was an amazing match. She played unbelievably. I fought till the end and never gave up."
It was tougher than she would have wanted to be but as she put it after the match she has now a reason to smile about so she will take it.
