Simona Halep won her first match since suffering a devastating injury earlier in the month by defeating
Magda Linette 6-4 4-6 6-1.
A very interesting affair between Linette and Halep got us underway on a Tuesday in Cincinnati. The match featured everything from stellar play by both players as well as another injury to Halep and a rain delay. It started off well for Simona who looked comfortable taking an early 3-1 lead.
Linette was able to pull it back to 3-3 but Halep once again took the break winning the set with 6-3. In the 2nd set, Halep sustained what appeared as another lower leg injury. Her play deteriorated and Linette took a lead before rain stopped play. Upon return, Linette was able to close the set out with 6-3.
The start of the 3rd set was very shaky by Halep. She faced several break points early but was able to hang on and win the first game. She then broke Linette to take a lead but once again needed to save break points to hold the 3-0 lead. Halep then added another break to make it 5-0 before closing it out with 6-1.
A great effort from Halep who won the match after a solid return in Montreal. She played fabulous at times but that lower leg injury that affected her play at the start of the 3rd set especially will be something to keep an eye on.
