Emma Raducanu advanced to the second round of the WTA event
Portoroz after Yastermska retired two points away from defeat.
Despite technically not winning the match, Raducanu was still happy with the outcome as the British player played a strong match battling hard in a very competitive match. Yastremska is a big fighter and Raducanu experienced that needing to dig deep in the 2nd set to get it done:
“Nobody wants to win due to retirement. Dayana is an extremely ferocious competitor. So I knew it was going to be a tough match going in. I'm really happy with the way that I stayed in the points and was fighting the whole way through. So I’m happy to be into the next round.”
It's a new beginning for Raducanu who found herself nearly out of the top 100 after the US Open. She is embracing the journey and wants to prove herself properly and this was a good start.
